In Sean Covey’s book the 4 Disciplines of Execution, he sites Apple as a company that had great ideas, but instead of running after all the great ideas, focused on making one great phone. That focus was their great strength.
What in your business could you focus on to make your business great?
When coaching business owners, one coaching session each month is dedicated to studying the financials. This allows the business owner to be aware of any changes in patterns and enables them to react quickly to the changes. But this is what has already happened in the past. What if your focus (in addition to always studying your financials) was on your key performance indicators? These are tasks that one needs to do every day on a regular basis that insures that the financials are in the black.
In sales, the key performance indicators might be daily, 10 phone calls and 3 customer visitations by the sales person.
In production, maybe quality control checks quality at designated points along the manufacturing line rather than wait until the product is completed.
In management, the key performance indicators might relate to budgets, communication, meetings, evaluations, and accountability.
The tasks we focus on each day turn into the results at the end of the day, the month, the year.
